Closer to Home Receives Astounding Community Support After Its Urgent Call for Adopt-a-Family

At the end of November, Closer to Home was faced with a never-before-seen situation in their Adopt-a-Family initiative Driven by Lexus of Calgary—a record number of identified families who needed support and a newly developed waitlist for families in need. With fewer donations than in previous years and an increased number of known families to support, plus a waitlist of new families that was growing daily, the circumstance quickly became a crisis. But thanks to the incredible support from the community, we met the need together!

Thanks to the amazing generosity of Calgarians, and help from the media to share our story, we were able to deliver hope and happiness to an unprecedented 570 families this holiday season. Thanks to you, together we supported 40% more families than the 407 families we helped last year.

Because of the remarkable response from the community, nearly 2,500 children and parents had food on the table, warm clothing, and gifts all in time for holiday celebrations this year. You made an incredible difference for vulnerable families this holiday season!

When we put out our urgent plea on December 1st, we truly did not know if we were going to be able to help all of our registered families this year, let alone our growing waitlist. But thanks to generous Calgarians and with the media’s support, we did it,” says Suzan Valenta, Director of Philanthropy. “Together we made a miracle happen. We are sincerely grateful and filled with joy!
