Behind the Match: How Adopt-a-Family Sparked Denise’s Journey of Healing and Hope

Denise’s first connection with Closer to Home came through our Adopt-a-Family program, during what she describes as one of the most difficult times in her life.

Recovering from surgery and relying on oxygen support, Denise was also caring for her young grandson. Despite her health challenges, she made the nearly two-hour bus ride to pick up gift cards provided through Adopt-a-Family.

During that visit, as part of our intake process, she bravely shared that her fridge was empty. There was no food at home, and she urgently needed formula and diapers for her grandson, which is why Adopt-a-Family was vital for her in that moment. However, our team recognized that she required additional support. Thanks to our Community Fund, our team was able to act promptly, purchasing the essentials and delivering them directly to her door that same day.

That first connection was just the beginning.

Since then, Denise has become an active part of the Closer to Home community. She now attends our Women’s Group, where she’s found encouragement, connection, and a safe space to heal and build new relationships. This summer, her grandchildren were also enrolled in our Summer in the City day camp program, giving them opportunities to learn, play, and make new friends.

Denise’s story shows how Adopt-a-Family can be more than a one-time gesture. It can be the first step toward building long-term community and support. What started with urgent needs —formula, food, and diapers —has grown into an ongoing connection, resilience, and hope.
