Participants will learn:
- Sacred Spaces and Seating Etiquette: Understanding the significance of the “Circle” (the arena) and learning where it is appropriate for spectators to sit versus where the dancers, elders, and drums are positioned.
- The Role of the Drum: Learning why the drum is considered the “heartbeat” of the Powwow, including the specific protocols for approaching the drum and showing respect to the singers.
- Regalia Respect and Vocabulary: Understanding that the outfits worn by dancers are Regalia, not “costumes,” and learning the rules against touching them or taking photos without explicit permission.
- Grand Entry and Sacred Songs: Identifying specific moments—like the Grand Entry or Flag Songs—where the audience is expected to stand and remove hats as a sign of reverence for veterans and ancestors.
- Protocols for Approaching an Elder: Learning the proper way to approach an Elder for guidance or conversation, which often involves offering a gift of traditional tobacco (or a small, meaningful token) as a gesture of respect and a request for their wisdom.
